Pack 662’s Spring Campout at Mataguay: Perfect Weather, First-Time Adventures, and Dutch Oven Stew

From May 30 to June 1, Pack 662 headed out to Mataguay Scout Camp for our annual Spring Campout—a weekend filled with outdoor fun, great food, and exciting firsts for many of our new Scouts. With near-perfect weather, clear skies, and just a brief touch of rain, the conditions couldn’t have been better for a weekend in the great outdoors.

Friday Night: Settling In and Simple Fun

Scouts and families arrived Friday evening, set up camp, and kicked off the weekend with a relaxing night around the campsite. The group played a crowd-favorite game of “I’m Thinking of an Animal”, allowing everyone to unwind and get into the campout spirit. It was a simple but meaningful start, especially for those Scouts attending their first overnight event with the pack.

Saturday: Crafts, Hiking, Fishing, and Canoeing

Saturday brought a full day of adventure and activity. In the morning, some Scouts joined DIY craft sessions, while others headed off to explore the area. The Webelos took on a hike, testing their trail skills and getting a great look at the surrounding nature. Meanwhile, younger Scouts enjoyed fishing and canoeing on the lake—for many, it was their first time paddling or casting a line.

Throughout the day, wildlife was spotted all around the camp, including a baby rattlesnake, which was safely observed from a respectful distance. It was a thrilling reminder that Mataguay is very much a part of the natural world and offered a great teaching moment about safety and awareness.

A brief afternoon rain shower passed through, adding a fun dose of unpredictability without dampening the day’s energy. Spirits remained high, and the Scouts continued to explore and play together, making the most of the time outdoors.

Saturday Night: Cowboy Stew and Campfire Skits

That evening, the pack came together for a signature Pack 662 tradition: Cowboy Stew. Each family brought a unique ingredient to contribute, and the Scouts helped prepare and stir the pot over the open fire, using Dutch ovens to cook the hearty meal to perfection. It was a collaborative effort that paid off with a delicious and filling dinner enjoyed by all.

After dinner, Scouts and families gathered around the campfire for a night of jokes, skits, and laughter. For new Scouts, it was a chance to experience the fun and fellowship that comes with being part of Pack 662, and for returning families, it was another memory to add to their scouting journey.

A Campout to Remember

While the campout didn’t include shooting sports or range activities, the weekend was a resounding success. The combination of great weather, a packed day of adventure, and a warm, welcoming environment made it a perfect first-time experience for many of our new Scouts.

With nearly full attendance from the pack, the Mataguay Spring Campout showed once again what makes Pack 662 special: strong community, shared traditions, and a love for the outdoors. The Scouts left tired, happy, and already looking forward to the next adventure.

Until next time—we’ll see you on the trail!
