What is Cub Scouts?
Cub Scouts is a nationally recognized program for boys and girls in Kindergarten through 5th grade. It helps children build character, develop citizenship, and grow leadership skills through fun, hands-on adventures. Scouts explore nature, work on creative projects, serve their community, and earn recognition for their progress. Cub Scouting is designed to involve the whole family and create lasting memories. It’s the first step in the broader Scouts BSA program.
Who can join Pack 662?
Pack 662 is open to all boys and girls in grades K–5, regardless of school, background, or previous Scouting experience. We serve families in the San Marcos and Escondido areas, especially east San Marcos and north Escondido. Whether you attend public school, private school, or homeschool, you’re welcome to join. Scouting is inclusive and open to all families looking for adventure, community, and personal growth.
What schools feed into Pack 662?
Most of our Scouts come from Richland Elementary, Knob Hill, Reidy Creek, San Marcos Elementary, St. Mary School, and Calvin Christian. We also have Scouts from surrounding schools and homeschool families. Pack 662 primarily serves east San Marcos and north Escondido, but we welcome families from other neighborhoods and nearby cities. If our location and schedule work for your family, you’re welcome in our Pack!
How much does it cost to join?
Annual National BSA dues are $169.95, or $154.95 if you choose not to receive the Scout Life magazine. Pack 662 also collects $150 in local dues, which may be prorated if you join mid-year. These dues help cover awards, Pinewood Derby kits, Pack events like the Blue & Gold Banquet, leader training, and Den supplies. Scouts can earn credit toward both National and Pack dues by participating in fall Popcorn Sales. If cost is a concern, please talk to your Den Leader—we’re happy to help.
Where do I buy the Cub Scout uniform?
You can purchase official uniforms at www.scoutshop.org. This is the official online store for the Boy Scouts of America. You can also visit your local Scout Shop if you prefer to see items in person. Your Den Leader will let you know which uniform pieces are required for your grade level.
Does Pack 662 offer uniform or book assistance?
Yes! We have a collection of gently used uniforms, neckerchiefs, hats, and other gear that Scouts can borrow if needed. The Scout Handbook is also available digitally, so purchasing a physical book is optional. We want every child to participate fully, regardless of financial situation. Just reach out to your Den Leader for help—we’re here to support your family.
Do you offer a welcome kit for new families?
Yes! Our New Member Coordinator will help you get started with a checklist that includes everything from uniforms and registration to meeting schedules and contact information. You’ll be introduced to your Den Leader and added to our communication channels. We want new families to feel connected and confident as they join the Pack. You’ll never be left wondering what to do next.
Does Pack 662 accept girls?
Absolutely! Pack 662 is a Family Pack, which means we welcome both boys and girls in every grade level, K–5. Boys and girls are usually assigned to separate Dens, but in our Pack, we often hold joint Den meetings with gender-appropriate leaders present. We believe in offering all Scouts the same opportunities to grow, learn, and explore together in a safe and respectful environment.
How many campouts or outdoor events are there each year?
Pack 662 hosts three major campouts each year—typically one in the fall, one in winter, and one in spring. These events are family-friendly and open to all Scouts and siblings. We also offer hikes, nature walks, park meetups, and service projects like clean-ups. Outdoor activities are a core part of Cub Scouting and a great way for Scouts to bond and build confidence.
Do you participate in district or national events?
Yes! We participate in Palomar District events like the District Pinewood Derby, Day Camp, and summer programs. We also take part in national service initiatives like Scouting for Food. These activities connect our Scouts to the wider Scouting community and offer even more chances for adventure and learning.
What does the Blue & Gold Banquet include?
The Blue & Gold Banquet is a special celebration held each year to honor the anniversary of Cub Scouting. It includes a family dinner, recognition of Scout achievements, and appreciation for our leaders and charter organization. We also host the Arrow of Light Ceremony at this event and sometimes include a bridging ceremony for Scouts moving into Scouts BSA. It’s a proud and festive night for all families.
Who can attend the Arrow of Light ceremony?
All immediate and extended family members are invited to attend. This milestone is held during the Blue & Gold Banquet and includes a formal ceremony recognizing Scouts who have completed the highest rank in Cub Scouting. It’s a great opportunity for pictures, celebration, and honoring your Scout’s hard work and growth.
What summer activities do you offer?
During summer, we host 2–3 activities per month to keep Scouts engaged and connected. These include hikes, beach cleanups, parades, nature exploration, museums, and Day Camp. Scouts can earn the National Summertime Pack Award for participating. We also use summer to introduce prospective families to Scouting in a relaxed and informal way.
What is the Pinewood Derby like?
Pack 662 holds a traditional Pinewood Derby each January or February. Every Scout receives a car kit and builds their own custom race car with help from family. Over the past few years, we’ve hosted a Glow Derby using black lights and glow-in-the-dark materials for extra fun! It’s one of the most exciting and memorable events of the year.
Is Cub Scouting safe?
Yes—your child’s safety is our top priority. All adult leaders complete BSA’s Youth Protection Training and pass a Live Scan background check. We teach age-appropriate safety lessons at every grade level and follow strict guidelines for outings and online communication. Learn more about our policies on the Scout Safety page.
How are awards and achievements recognized?
Scouts are recognized monthly at Pack meetings for their accomplishments. Belt loops, patches, and rank badges are awarded in front of family and fellow Scouts. We also hold a fun Bobcat Ceremony to welcome first-year Scouts into the Pack. Recognition keeps kids motivated and proud of their progress.
Do we need to attend every meeting?
No. We understand that families have busy lives and sometimes other commitments take priority. If your Scout misses a meeting, they can catch up at home or by coordinating with their Den Leader. We offer flexibility while encouraging regular participation.
What if we miss a Pack event?
That’s totally okay! We encourage families to attend what they can. Many families attend part of a campout or skip certain events based on their schedule. You’re always welcome at the next one.
How can I become a leader or volunteer?
We welcome parents to get involved in any way they can—big or small. You can help with a Den meeting, bring snacks, coordinate an outing, or step into a leadership role. All volunteers must complete Youth Protection Training, and leaders must also pass a background check. No experience is required—we’ll provide training and support.
How is Pack 662 funded?
We are self-funded through annual Popcorn Sales and local events like the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast. These efforts help us cover awards, leader training, event supplies, and activities for the Scouts. Your support through fundraising makes a big difference!
Can fundraising cover dues or camp?
Yes! Scouts who participate in Popcorn Sales can earn credit toward their National dues, Pack dues, and even Summer Camp. We offer incentives and tracking tools to help families reach their goals. Sales can be done door-to-door, at booths, or online.
Do I have to belong to a certain school or church?
No, there are no school or church requirements. Pack 662 is open to all families regardless of school, religion, or background. We welcome Scouts from public, private, charter, and homeschool communities.
What if we join mid-year?
It’s common for families to join mid-year, and most ranks can still be earned in a few months. Your Den Leader will help you create a plan to catch up at your own pace. We’ll also incorporate key activities into future meetings to help new Scouts stay engaged.
How do I stay informed?
You’ll be added to Scoutbook, which we use to track advancement and share our Pack calendar. You’ll also be invited to join our Band app group, which is our main hub for Den-specific updates, reminders, and event communication. Our website is also updated regularly.
What’s the structure of a typical meeting?
Pack meetings last about 1 to 1.5 hours and include an opening flag ceremony, announcements, awards, a group activity, and closing. Den meetings are smaller and typically last about 1 hour, with hands-on activities focused on earning adventures. Both meetings are designed to be engaging, fast-paced, and fun!
What should my Scout bring to a meeting?
Scouts should wear their Class A uniform to most meetings unless otherwise instructed. For active events like hikes or service projects, we wear Class B Pack t-shirts. Bringing a water bottle, positive attitude, and Scout spirit is always encouraged!
